Subnautica 2 Is Live - Early Access Launch Day Report
Subnautica 2 entered Early Access on May 14, 2026 at 08:00 PDT. The launch went out the door clean: Unknown Worlds reported more than 1 million copies sold in the first hour, Krafton later reported more than 2 million copies within 12 hours, public media coverage reported more than 4 million copies in less than a week and more than 5 million by July 9, peak concurrent players reached 651,000 across Steam, Epic, and Xbox, server access held up, crossplay co-op worked, and the Steam review verdict settled into Very Positive. The September 4 source check keeps Buddy System Hotfix 1 as the public-build baseline after EA 1.2, Adaptive Measures, and Hotfix 4.
The August source check added both an opt-in Experimental Steam branch and the public EA 1.2 Buddy System update. The September follow-up is Buddy System Hotfix 1. Experimental remains separate; Hotfix 1 is the normal public branch.
In short. Subnautica 2 launched on schedule, crossed 5 million copies sold by July 9 according to public media coverage syndicated through Steam, and still shows a Very Positive Steam verdict in the September 4 review API checkpoint. Buddy System Hotfix 1 is now the public build with save checks, Powerplant recovery, push-to-talk, and additional co-op stability fixes on top of proximity chat, revives, trading, emotes, and Tracking Tags. The two launch-day systems most worth knowing about are still Digestive Incompatibility and biomods.
Branch note: Experimental is a disposable preview channel with separate saves; Buddy System Hotfix 1 is the normal public build.
