Startup, crash and save help

Subnautica 2 Crashing, Black Screen & Not Launching Fixes

Find the check that matches the failure you can see: a Play button that resets, a black screen, a graphics error, a missing save or a failed co-op join.

Quick answer. Finish game updates, note the exact error and confirm the branch before changing files. For startup crashes, verify the installation. For missing saves, check main versus Experimental first. Match the symptom below before reinstalling.

Before testing: record three details

  1. Where it fails: before the menu, while loading a save, during play, or when joining another player.
  2. What changed: game update, driver, mod, branch, account or graphics setting. Write down the build and error text.
  3. What still works: another save, a new separate save, solo play or other games on the same storefront. Keep your original save intact.

If sign-in or game access also fails, check platform service status. If the game runs but feels slow, go directly to low FPS and stutter troubleshooting.

Match your crash or launch symptom

Play button returns to Play, or the game closes before the menu

Try first: Record the error text, storefront and current build. Finish available game updates, restart the client, then verify game files where the storefront offers that option.

What is known: Unknown Worlds warns in Hotfix 1 that outdated mods may cause crashes after an update. Hotfix 3 also fixed a rare crash when starting games; that does not identify every remaining startup crash.

If it continues: If the unmodded game still fails, note whether a crash-report window appears and include its identifier in your report.

Black screen on launch, with or without audio

Try first: On Windows, try Alt+Enter once to check whether a display-mode switch restores the picture. Close optional overlays or recording tools for one test, then restart the game. These are diagnostic comparisons, cannot resolve every black screen.

What is known: A black screen alone does not establish an overlay conflict, corrupt settings or a driver fault. Record whether audio continues, whether the mouse responds and when the screen turns black.

If it continues: If the menu becomes reachable, record your current settings before changing the display mode or graphics preset. Avoid deleting a guessed configuration folder.

DirectX 12, unsupported graphics or GPU error

Try first: Compare the exact GPU and driver with the published requirements. On Windows, run dxdiag to collect the GPU, driver and DirectX information; on a laptop, also check which GPU the game is using.

What is known: The published PC requirements specify DirectX 12. A DirectX version shown by Windows alone does not guarantee the installed GPU and driver meet every requirement.

If it continues: Install an appropriate driver from the GPU manufacturer if yours is outdated or broken. Keep the exact error text; do not assume a -dx11 launch argument is a supported workaround.

Crash after enabling DLSS, Frame Generation, Reflex or VSync

Try first: Update the game first. If you can reach settings, record the current values, turn Frame Generation off for a baseline and change one related toggle at a time.

What is known: Hotfix 3 addresses DLSS crashes and settings persistence. EA 1.2 adds VSync / Frame Generation compatibility and fixes inconsistent Reflex / Frame Generation behavior.

If it continues: Record GPU, driver, resolution, upscaling preset, Frame Generation multiplier, Reflex and VSync. Follow the performance guide for a repeatable comparison.

Save missing, incompatible or rejected after switching versions

Try first: Confirm main versus Experimental before touching files. Official Experimental saves are separate from main saves. Switch back to the branch where the save was created and confirm the correct account.

What is known: Hotfix 1 records save build and branch metadata to prevent incompatible saves loading in older builds. An incompatibility message is not an indication that the save has been deleted.

If it continues: Keep a backup before any recovery attempt. Do not copy saves between main and Experimental as a troubleshooting shortcut; use the save-file and cloud-save guides.

“Platform write failed for save slot” or saving fails

Try first: Record the exact message and time. Check available space, whether the correct account is signed in and any actual file-access warning from the platform or Windows.

What is known: Hotfix 1 adds better logging for this save-failure message. The notes do not announce a single universal cause or a guaranteed fix for every write failure.

If it continues: Avoid overwriting your only known-good save while experimenting. Preserve logs and existing saves, then send the message, platform and reproduction steps through support.

Co-op invite fails, session cannot be joined or joining crashes

Try first: Have every player check their build and branch. Confirm the host session is still running, restart the session and retry from the game’s own multiplayer flow. Check storefront or platform status if sign-in is also failing.

What is known: A failed invite does not by itself prove a service outage or a local networking fault. Distinguish host from guest and an immediate crash from an invitation that expires.

If it continues: Record both platforms, who hosts and the exact join step that fails. The co-op guide and known-issues page cover multiplayer-specific next steps.

Steam, Epic, Xbox and Game Pass checks

Use the checklist for the platform you launch from. Start with updates, sign-in and verification. On Windows, check the official PC requirements before expecting settings changes to solve a hardware limitation.

Steam on Windows

  1. Finish the queued download or update, then restart Steam.
  2. Right-click Subnautica 2 in Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
  3. Check Game Versions & Betas if you recently opted into Experimental; use the branch associated with the save.
  4. Record and temporarily remove custom launch options you added, so the next comparison uses a known baseline.

Epic Games Store

  1. Confirm the signed-in account owns the game and any queued update has finished.
  2. Use the game’s Library management menu to verify the installation; menu wording can vary by launcher version.
  3. Restart the launcher after verification, then record whether the failure occurs before launch, at the menu or while loading a save.
  4. Keep mod removal separate from file verification: extra mod files may remain even when original game files are repaired.

Xbox app on PC / Game Pass

  1. Confirm the account used for the purchase or eligible subscription, and read any access or subscription error before reinstalling.
  2. Finish updates in the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, including Gaming Services when an update is offered.
  3. Restart the PC, then check whether other installed games also fail; that distinction helps separate an app problem from a game problem.
  4. If the Xbox app itself fails, use Windows’ app Repair option where available. Read any reset or removal warning before proceeding beyond repair.

Xbox Series X|S

  1. Finish the game update and fully quit the running game before relaunching.
  2. Restart the console, then confirm the purchase or eligible subscription account is signed in.
  3. If you joined the Experimental preview through Xbox Insider Hub, check that preview status before diagnosing missing saves.
  4. Record the console model and error message. A console factory reset is not part of this first-pass checklist.

Steam’s file-verification instructions describe the repair process. Verification checks original game files; it is not a save-recovery procedure or confirmation that all third-party files have been removed.

Main vs Experimental: missing-save checks

Experimental is available through Steam and Xbox Insider Hub. The official branch announcement says saves are stored separately and main saves should reappear when switching back. Hotfix 1 also rejects incompatible saves from newer builds.

Check the branch and account first, then follow the save-file guide for local backups or the cloud-save guide for synchronization problems. If you need to compare a fresh game, create a separate save on the same branch.

Send a report the developer can reproduce

You can report a repeatable failure without exhausting every possible tweak. Include the platform, build, branch, exact error, steps leading to the failure and what you have already compared. For PC graphics issues, add GPU, driver and graphics settings; for co-op, add host and guest platforms.

EA 1.2 adds save attachments to the in-game feedback tool. Use them when a specific save reproduces the issue and the game remains accessible. The bug report guide covers feedback and support routes when the game will not open.

Troubleshooting questions

Subnautica 2 will not launch. What should I try first?

Finish updates, record the exact error and build, restart the storefront, and verify files where available. Then use the symptom-specific checks for black screens, DirectX errors or DLSS crashes.

Should I reinstall Subnautica 2 after a crash?

Start with updates and file verification or repair where available. Reinstallation can be useful for a damaged installation, but it does not explain a branch mismatch, subscription problem or save-specific failure. Back up accessible saves before any removal step.

Is there one guaranteed black-screen fix?

No. A Windows display-mode comparison, optional-overlay check and file verification can narrow the cause. Record whether there is audio and whether the menu is ever visible. Keep a backup before changing configuration files.

Did Experimental delete my main save?

The official branch announcement says Experimental stores saves separately, so main saves do not appear while playing Experimental. Switch back to main and confirm the account before attempting recovery. The branches are not a supported save-transfer path.

Where are my Subnautica 2 saves?

Use the separate save-file-location guide for the platform-specific research and backup procedure. Avoid treating a generic Unreal Engine folder or the WindowsApps installation directory as a verified save location for every storefront.

Should I delete shader caches or change BIOS settings?

Neither is a first-pass game-specific fix established by the official sources here. Repeated stutter and early crashes can have several causes. Collect the build, driver, settings and reproduction steps before applying instructions that remove files or change hardware configuration.

Can I report first-session stutter?

Yes. Note whether it is a brief one-off pause, repeats at the same location, or persists after restarting. Do not wait through persistent stutter just because it happened during the first session. A repeatable report can help the developer investigate performance problems.
