Subnautica 2 on Steam Deck: Verified Status & Settings
Check what Valve’s rating covers, set up a useful graphics comparison and handle controller or Proton problems without assuming a desktop Windows fix applies.
Quick answer. Subnautica 2 is Steam Deck Verified in Valve’s report checked on October 4, 2026. The report includes an external-controller notice. Start with default settings, then compare your own route before choosing a graphics preset, frame cap or power limit.
Reviewed 2026-10-04. Current Valve compatibility report and official update notes; no Sub2Wiki Steam Deck FPS or battery benchmark.
The default controller configuration is functional.
Controller button icons match the Deck.
Interface text is readable.
The default configuration passes Valve’s performance assessment.
A separate external-controller notice is present; read it before relying on a Bluetooth or USB controller.
Valve’s Verified program explanation covers input, display, seamless operation and system support. It also says compatibility review continues over time. This rating does not supply a benchmark for your particular save, preset or mod setup.
Steam Deck settings: six practical checks
1. Start with the default setup
Install available SteamOS and game updates. Record the game build, SteamOS version and any existing per-game overrides. Start with Steam’s selected compatibility tool and the game’s default controls before changing Proton versions.
2. Compare one graphics setting
Use the same save and a short repeatable route. Record resolution, graphics preset and any upscaling option your menu exposes. Compare a lower preset or resolution, then change only one setting for the next pass.
3. Choose a frame cap after measuring
Try a cap your Deck can maintain on that route and compare frame consistency and input response. Keep the screen refresh rate and power settings recorded. A cap is a user-selected target, not a measured performance promise for this game.
4. Change power limits separately
Keep the power limit unchanged for the initial graphics comparison. If you later lower it, repeat the route and compare performance and battery drain. We have not measured a recommended wattage or battery runtime for Subnautica 2.
5. Separate controls from performance
For sluggish camera movement, compare in-game sensitivity, the Steam Input layout and gyro state. Change one at a time. If the whole game stutters, use the performance checklist before compensating with more sensitivity.
6. Keep a baseline for comparison
Record the game build, SteamOS version and graphics settings before each comparison. Use the same save and route so that the result reflects the setting you changed.
Record whether your device is LCD or OLED, its SteamOS version, the game build, resolution, preset, frame cap, power limit and the same route used for each comparison. Keep charging state consistent if you compare battery drain. Use the performance checklist for the remaining details.
Controller sensitivity, external controllers and FOV
If built-in controls work but an external controller does not, compare the selected controller and Steam Input layout before changing graphics settings. Valve’s external-controller notice is a reason to read the current compatibility details; we have not independently tested a particular Bluetooth or USB model.
An FOV slider is already available: Adaptive Measures added it. Buddy System fixes mask clipping while adjusting FOV and changes that only applied after leaving Settings. Use the in-game option for camera comfort rather than an old request for the feature.
For sensitivity, compare the in-game value, stick response and gyro state separately. A camera preference and inconsistent frame delivery can feel similar; keep your route and graphics settings unchanged while adjusting controls.
Proton Experimental and the game’s Experimental branch are different
Proton is the compatibility tool used for Windows games on SteamOS. Changing its version does not enroll Subnautica 2 in the developer’s Experimental game branch. Start with Steam’s selected tool; use an alternate version as a recorded comparison for a specific problem.
The game’s Experimental branch is a separate opt-in build with separate saves. Confirm which branch holds your world before switching. Nvidia-specific DLSS or RTX Frame Generation fixes are also distinct from Steam Deck’s standard hardware and SteamOS setup.
Read community performance reports with the settings attached
ProtonDB’s Subnautica 2 page can help you find player experiences. Prefer reports with a date, game build, Deck model, SteamOS/Proton version, resolution and power settings. An older launch result or a Windows handheld result may not describe your current Deck setup.
For a reproducible problem, use the bug report guide and include whether it occurs on a new separate save and without mods. The Verified badge remains useful compatibility information, while these details help explain the failure you are seeing.
Steam Deck questions
Is Subnautica 2 Steam Deck Verified?
Yes. Valve’s game-specific compatibility report returned Verified when checked on October 4, 2026. It lists working default controls, appropriate button icons, readable interface text and a suitable default configuration, plus a separate external-controller notice.
Does Verified mean 60 FPS on Steam Deck?
No fixed 60 FPS result is given by the compatibility report. Valve evaluates input, display, usability and system support. Our page does not have a controlled Subnautica 2 Deck benchmark, so it does not promise a particular FPS or battery runtime.
What are the best Steam Deck settings for Subnautica 2?
Begin with the default setup, compare the same short route at a lower graphics preset if necessary, and set a frame cap that your own Deck can sustain. Keep resolution, SteamOS version and power settings recorded. We have not measured a universal best preset or 10-watt recommendation.
Should I force Proton Experimental?
There is no universal requirement to force it in the Valve compatibility report reviewed here. Start with Steam’s selected compatibility tool. If you compare another Proton version for a specific problem, record the original choice and the result. Proton Experimental is separate from the game’s Experimental branch.
Does Subnautica 2 have an FOV slider?
Yes. The Adaptive Measures update added an FOV slider. Buddy System later fixed the mask clipping while adjusting FOV and a case where changes applied only after leaving Settings. Adjust the in-game option for comfort and compare performance if you make a large change.
Why does an external controller behave differently?
Valve’s current report includes an external-controller notice alongside the Verified rating. Check the detailed notice in Steam and compare the built-in controls with the connected controller. Confirm the active controller and Steam Input layout; the rating alone does not establish automatic switching for every device.
Can I use the Windows DLSS settings on Steam Deck?
Nvidia-only DLSS and RTX Frame Generation options do not apply to the standard Steam Deck GPU. Use the graphics options exposed on your Deck and keep SteamOS/Proton issues separate from Windows driver instructions.
