Subnautica 2 Cloud Saves & Upload to Cloud

Subnautica 2 can share saves across supported platforms. In the game’s main menu, choose a saved game, use Save to Cloud, then enter the generated code through Import Save File on your other platform. Steam Cloud and Xbox account synchronization also move progress between devices, but use their own platform accounts.

Moving from Steam to Xbox? Use the game’s manual Save Code transfer. Automatic platform synchronization and a one-time imported save have different roles. Check the game build and branch first: Experimental and default saves remain incompatible.

Reviewed 2026-10-04. Cross-platform Save Code instructions are from Unknown Worlds Support, updated September 24, 2026.

Experimental branch warning. Steam's opt-in preview branch uses separate saves. Steam Cloud does not make Experimental saves compatible with the main Early Access build, so use a throwaway preview world and a manual backup.

Automatic sync and manual transfer

From To Method How
Steam (PC) Steam (another PC) Automatic Steam Cloud when enabled, using the same Steam account. Let synchronization finish before switching PCs.
Xbox Series Xbox on PC / Game Pass Automatic Xbox account synchronization on supported Xbox Play Anywhere devices, using the same Microsoft account.
Xbox Cloud Gaming Xbox Series or PC Automatic Microsoft account cloud saves. Wait for the latest session to sync before continuing elsewhere.
Steam Xbox Save Code Use the game’s Save to Cloud action, then Import Save File on the destination. This is a manual transfer across platforms.
Another supported platform Steam / Xbox / another supported platform Save Code Unknown Worlds documents sharing across platforms through the generated code. Keep the game build and branch compatible.

Upload to Cloud: what to do before switching devices

Use the game’s Save to Cloud action to generate a shareable code. For automatic synchronization on the same platform service, wait for the launcher or console to finish syncing instead. Follow the appropriate flow below.

Steam Cloud, in practice

  • Check the game’s Steam Properties and the Steam Cloud setting for your account. The official support page describes cloud backup as dependent on account settings.
  • Close the game normally and let Steam finish synchronizing before launching on another PC. Use the same Steam account for automatic synchronization.
  • If Steam reports a conflict, compare the device, play session and timestamps. Preserve accessible local files before choosing; a later timestamp alone does not prove a copy has the progress you want.
  • Steam Cloud synchronization and the game’s Save Code are separate mechanisms. A Save Code provides the manual route when moving to another supported platform.

Xbox Play Anywhere, in practice

  • Use the same Microsoft account for automatic save synchronization across supported Xbox Play Anywhere devices.
  • Close one session and allow its save synchronization to finish before continuing on another device. Resolve any platform prompts before opening the world.
  • Use Subnautica 2’s in-game Save to Cloud and Import Save File actions for a manual copy on another supported platform.
  • Xbox platform synchronization keeps your devices aligned; it is not a dated archive of every older save. Keep a separate backup where the platform and game provide that option.

What a Save Code transfers

A Save Code lets you bring a saved world to another supported platform. It does not connect the two platform cloud services into one ongoing synchronization service.

Backup advice for Early Access

EA patches change things. Sometimes they change the save format. A weekly habit avoids the worst outcome.

Preserve a copy before changes

For accessible PC saves, close the game and copy the confirmed active save folder into a dated backup. Use the save-location guide to distinguish local files, platform synchronization and the game’s Save Code.

Keep backup and synchronization separate

Automatic cloud synchronization may upload a changed save. A separate dated copy preserves the earlier state. The official Save Code instructions explain sharing, but do not specify an indefinite backup retention period.

Name your backups by version

Rename backup folders with the patch and branch: SaveGames_EA12-public, SaveGames_buddy-hotfix-1, or SaveGames_experimental-test. When something breaks, you can step back without guessing which build wrote the folder.

Test the restore before you need it

Keep the original and backup intact while checking a copied save. Confirm the expected world, branch and progress load successfully. Do not delete a cloud save or clear console storage to test a backup.

Questions people ask

What does Upload to Cloud mean in Subnautica 2?

In Subnautica 2’s save menu, Save to Cloud generates a code that you can enter through Import Save File on another supported platform. Unknown Worlds documents this as cross-platform save sharing. Steam Cloud and Xbox cloud synchronization are separate, account-based services.

Can I paste a Save Code into Cloud Save Download?

Yes. Early Access 1.2 added direct paste support in the Cloud Save Download field. The official save-sharing instructions say to generate the code with Save to Cloud, then use Import Save File on the other platform. Check the branch and build before loading the imported save.

Does Subnautica 2 support cloud saves on Steam?

The official save-storage support page names Steam Cloud as a backup option, depending on account settings. Check Subnautica 2’s Steam Properties and allow synchronization to complete before continuing on another PC.

Can I move my Steam save to Xbox?

Yes, through the game’s manual Save Code sharing. Choose the save in the main menu, use Save to Cloud, then enter its code in Import Save File on the other platform. This does not enable automatic Steam-to-Xbox synchronization, and it does not make Experimental saves compatible with the main branch.

I started on Xbox on PC and bought a Series X — do I have to start over?

No. Xbox Play Anywhere syncs the save between Xbox console, Xbox on PC, ROG Xbox Ally, and Xbox Cloud Gaming as long as you sign in with the same Microsoft account. This is the one cross-device path that works automatically.

Steam says there is a sync conflict when I launch. What do I do?

Pause before choosing a copy. Compare which device you last played on, the expected world progress and both timestamps. Preserve accessible local files first. A newer timestamp can also belong to an unintended change, so it is not enough on its own to choose the right save.

My save file is corrupted. Will Steam Cloud have an older copy?

Do not assume an older version is available. Cloud synchronization may already contain the same changed save as your device. Preserve the files you still have, check your own dated backups and use the official support route before replacing or deleting anything.

Do co-op saves sync separately from solo saves?

Platform cloud synchronization follows the account. Separately, Unknown Worlds says the in-game save-sharing flow is available from either the single-player or multiplayer save list. Importing a saved world is different from migrating the host of a live co-op session.

Does Steam Cloud merge Experimental and main-branch saves?

No. Unknown Worlds says Experimental and main-branch saves are stored separately and are not compatible for import or export. Treat the preview branch as its own save line and keep a manual backup before opting in.
